What is a physical therapist?

A physical therapist is an individual who has graduated from a school of physical therapy and holds a license to practice physical therapy granted by the affiliated credentialing board.

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a hands-on component of healthcare ordered by the physician, primarily designed to:

  • Prevent disability and pain.
  • Restore function and relief from pain.
  • Promote healing.
  • Help patients adapt to a permanent disability.

Physical therapy is a critical part of the total care for patients who have problems of temporary or permanent disability.

How is physical therapy performed?

The physical therapist selects appropriate tests to evaluate and quantitatively measure your specific problem. In consultation with your Affinity Healthcare physician, the physical therapist will develop a rehabilitation plan.
Some typical physical therapy procedures include:

  • therapeutic activities
  • neuromuscular re-education
  • ultrasound
  • electrical stimulation
  • soft tissue mobilization

How do I start Physical Therapy?

Your doctor usually needs to provide you with an order for physical therapy. Depending upon your insurance plan, our staff member handling referrals at your Affinity Healthcare physician's office can can provide the appropriate paperwork for you.

Where do I go for Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is currently available at  Affinity Healthcare's office located at 1590 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL. Your doctor will provide a physical therapy order to take with you to your Physical Therapy appointment, either at Affinity Healthcare's physical therapy, or to another physical therapy provider of your choice.   Reports of your visits will be provided to your primary care physician for your medical chart.

Before you start an exercise program of any kind, talk to your Affinity Healthcare physician. If you do embark on a program, stretching before and after exercise are very important to avoid injury. Here are just a few illustrative examples that our physical therapists recommend:

XIN YANGXIN YANG

Xin Yang received her BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1997.  Her prior physical therapy work experience includes MacNeal Memorial Hospital, Berwyn, IL; Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago; and Ballard Healthcare Residence, Des Plaines, IL.   Xin is experienced in numerous physical therapy modalities, including ultrasound, electric stimulation, TENS, biofeedback, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, among others. Xin believes in treating the whole person rather than only the injury itself, addressing issues of general fitness, nutrition, and stress reduction, etc.  Xin is fluent in Chinese and English.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running and cooking in.

 


JOHN T. KLASEN

John Klasen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University Medical School in 1975, and has gone on to become certified in the McKenzie method of mechanical diagnosis and therapy, specializing in spinal pain.

 

John has over 30 years of clinical experience ranging from Senior Physical Therapist at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge to supervisory positions at several private sports medicine facilities.  Having worked with a variety of professional athletes in facilities such as the Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Institute, Carol Stream, lI., the Sports Fitness Institute, Glen Ellyn, Il and Bannockburn Tennis Club, John has also developed a particular interest in runners and runner’s problems.

 

With special interests in spinal pain, joint pain, runner’s problems and a philosophy

of holistic total body fitness.    

 

KATIE PETERSON

Katie Peterson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in July 2001.  She has worked in a wide variety of settings, including wound care and pediatrics. 

Her rotations included work at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and St Joseph Hospital in Chicago.

 

Katie has worked primarily in outpatient orthopedic during her career, and has been with Affinity Healthcare since 2004.

 

Prior to working at Affinity Healthcare, she was employed at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park.  She worked primarily in outpatient orthopedics, but also did weekend work in the acute and sub-acute care settings at the hospital.   At Gottlieb she was able to take her patients to the attached fitness center and either instruct them in the use of fitness center equipment, or instruct them in aquatic exercises in the swimming pool. 

 

Katie's treatment philosophy is to treat the whole person in addition to the injury itself, including addressing issues of physical and mental well being, general fitness and nutrition, and stress reduction. 

 


DAVID RIVERA

David Rivera joined Affinity Healthcare's Physical Therapy Department in 2005 from his position of Director of Physical Therapy at Advanced Surgical Specialists, Hoffman Estates, IL. 

David earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2002 and his Masters of Physical Therapy in 2004; both from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  His physical therapy training experience includes the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago, IL; Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, IL; and Concentra Medical Centers, Oakland.

His experience includes both inpatient and outpatient neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation, using a wide variety of physical therapy techniques.
